Education is an important part of a cardiac wellness program. You need to learn the tools needed to minimize your risk for heart disease.

As a member you have access to information on nutrition, diabetes management, stress management, and general lifestyle choices to help you strengthen your hearts and lead a healthier life. You learn how to self-monitor, recognize symptoms, take your pulse and blood pressure, and more. In addition to individualized information from your care nurse and our dietician, you will have the opportunity to attend classes and workshops. The following series/workshops are offered on a regular basis.
  • Heart Healthy Eating – a monthly workshop on nutrition led by a registered dietician. You will learn new ways of eating healthy and get many recipes
  • Take Heart! Diabetes Self-Management Education – a 4-week program led by a certified diabetes care and education specialist, giving you the knowledge, the skills, and the discipline to take control of your diabetes (Spring and Fall, extra fee)
  • Mindful Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) – a program that helps you learn to calm your mind and body to help you cope with illness, pain, and stress (Spring and Fall, extra fee)

After all that has happened, here is what I have learned: that I need discipline in order to stick to my diet. I myself also need to be in a cardiac rehabilitation program regularly over many years, and practice religiously all the drills we were given in our stress modification group.
